Wer kommt in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Musiker können 25 Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung ihrer ersten Aufnahme aufgenommen werden. Das Nominierungskomitee der Stiftung (das sich aus Rockhistorikern zusammensetzt) wählt jedes Jahr Nominierte in der Kategorie Performer aus, die dann von einem internationalen Gremium aus rund 500 Rockexperten gewählt werden.

Ist der Prozess transparent?

Auch wenn die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame sehr um Transparenz bemüht ist. Am Ende ist die Arbeit des Nominierungskomitees schwer nachvollziehbar. Die Nominierungen werden jedes Jahr heftig kritisiert. Dabei ist es allerdings nicht einfach diese Kritik sinnvoll zu adressieren, denn die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bekräftigt, vollkommen von den Entscheidungen der Stiftung abhängig zu sein. Die Stiftung wiederum beruft sich auf das Nominierungskomitee und dessen Unabhängigkeit. In den letzten Jahren gab es Bemühungen den Prozess zu demokratisieren und für Diversität zu sorgen. Tatsächlich sind dadurch mehr Frauen in die Ruhmeshalle gekommen (bisher sind es dennoch weniger als 10%).

Wer bezahlt die Rechnung?

Geld für das Betreiben der Rock and Roll Hall of Fame gibt die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. Die Stiftung, aber auch die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, sind nach amerikanischem Recht "nicht gewinnbringende Organisationen". Die Stiftung veröffentlicht ihre Geldquellen ganz transparent. Die Geldgeber sind ihrerseits sehr oft Stiftungen. Aber auch die Eintrittsgelder und Veranstaltungen tragen zur Finanzierung bei. Hier gibt es eine Übersicht.

Welche Vorteile haben Musiker?

Die Vorteile der Musiker durch eine Nominierung oder Aufnahme in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame sind eher mittelbar. Die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bietet den Künstlern keinen direkten finanziellen Vorteil. Die Zeitschrift Spin hat allerdings ermittelt, dass Bands durchaus von der Rock and Roll Hall of Fame profitieren. Die Social Media-Nennungen brachten Bands durch die Reihe zusätzliche Einnahmen im Streaming. Allerdings war der Effekt ungleich deutlicher, wenn die Bands zu dem Zeitpunkt auf Tour gingen und bereit waren bei TV-Shows aufzutreten. In solchen Fällen konnten die Bands deutlich Kasse machen. Manager sprechen von einer "money-making Opportunity".

Ist die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame gut besucht?

Tatsächlich sind die aktuellsten Besucherzahlen aus dem Jahr 2017. In dem Jahr hatte die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame über 560.000 Besucher. Täglich verteilen sich also deutlich über 1.000 Besucher auf weit über 10.000 Ausstellungsfläche. Anders gesagt: richtig voll wird es selten. Denn, auch wenn sich die Aussteller große Mühe geben, sind es meist alte Klamotten, Instrumente und Platten, die ausgestellt werden. Der Eintrittspreis von über 30 Euro (ohne Parkplatz) wird allgemein kritisiert. Ehrlicherweise hat Cleveland ansonsten nicht viele Highlight zu bieten.
